Minor Excitement

Jane finally has a bed! We lived in Virginia for nearly eight months and I never got the pictures hung on the wall so two and a half months doesn’t seem that bad of a time frame for getting settled...unless you are the little girl stuffed into a pack-n-play every night, I suppose. We asked Jane yesterday if she would like a big girl bed and without hesitation she said, “okay” while vigorously nodding her head. She looked so small as we tucked her in and pulled the quilt up around her chin. This morning she just lay in bed grinning. I think she was waiting for someone to come get her out of her crib.

Kate came up with a great phrase this week. She was telling me a story about when her Dad asked her to “come here and look at something” and so she, “come eared.” Come eared. I like that phrase. It is fun having a little one who talks so much, as long as she is not talking back, of course. She makes me laugh almost every day. Today after church we were driving the long way home hoping the two little ones in the back seat would fall asleep. Instead after about 25 minutes Kate piped up and said, “Dad, I’m getting hungry. Don’t you think we should start heading home now?” She won.

Kate also sings to herself. Sometimes she sings a familiar song and sometimes she just makes things up about whatever she is doing or thinking about at the moment. Almost every Monday during Family Home Evening when I ask her what song she wants to sing she’ll say, “Oh, I know one. But you don’t know it. You’ll just have to listen.” Then she makes up a little song. At the end she gets her little sheepish grin, cocks her head to the side, and looks up at you with wide eyes waiting for applause or praise, both of which are lavishly bestowed. That is one of the things I want to remember about little girl Kate!

Last night we went to a film premier at Longwood Gardens of a documentary about Pierre Dupont. I signed up to attend this event at least a month ago. It sounded like our kind of evening: a speaker and a documentary in a beautiful setting. As it got closer it didn’t seem like we were going to make it. Josh had a study group, we didn’t have a babysitter, Jane was grumpy, and then all of a sudden everything came together after all! So off we went. It was great. We were probably the youngest couple there, but they gave us the royal treatment including complimentary popcorn, candy, and drinks. We had a grand time. Longwood Gardens is quickly becoming one of my favorite destinations in Philly.

So, this week hasn’t been that eventful. Josh has been really busy with school. Surprise. I’m trying to hold down the fort at home. Next week Josh has finals and I am in charge of putting on a Halloween Party for all the Wharton students with families. We’ll see how all of that goes down. Maybe we’ll both get kicked out & sent back to Utah.
