In the Groove

When I came to the computer to write my letter today the word processor was already open and I found the following message:

dir mom i love you

The other day I found iChat open with messages sent to aunts and uncles:

dir alsin i wod lik to tok with you on ichat

dir grasy i wod lik to tok to you

dir cherl i wod lik to tok to you

I also found a note Kate wrote to her friend Makenna:

dir makenna mae you ask yor mom to mov to texis.

Watching your child’s world open up as she learns to read is incredible. I had no intention of teaching Kate to read before school, but I can’t stop her. She started by asking me what signs in store windows said. Then she became interested in letters and sounds. Now she reads Cowboy Sam books, Dick and Jane, or Little Monster to me or Jane or Dad or a stuffed animal, whoever is available to listen. Today during the sacrament meeting she was reading a book about Daniel in the Lions’ Den. I sat there in amazement as she sounded out words she has never seen before like law and worship. As you see from the examples above, she is also now into writing notes. I have a pile of notes she wants me to mail to various people. I am going to have to buy bulk stamps.

Jane is 100% into her polly pockets. She would play with them all day every day. It is fun to see her take ownership of something. She plays with them carefully, cleans them up, and locks them in their case all by herself. Her favorite thing in the world is playing “pollys with Dad.” Kate had a birthday party this week. I was worried about Jane feeling left out, but then she informed me she was “playing pollys with Dad” as if nothing in the world could possibly take precedent over that.

Josh is back in the school routine and I am back in the home routine. We were hoping to start running again, but it is so cold here your eyeballs freeze when you go outside. Yesterday the high was 19 degrees and the “feels like” temperature was 8! Somehow my motivation to run disappears the second I open the door. If it is this cold you should be in a winter wonderland like Island Park. There are a couple cool cold weather things here in Philadelphia: the partially frozen over Schuylkill River is very pretty, and the highway is lined with enormous icicles cascading down the rocks. Lovely (especially from the inside of a warm car)!

In closing I’d like to put a couple of the mysteries of parenthood out there for discussion. Why do kids randomly fall of their chairs in the middle of dinner? And, why do kids only sleep in on days when you have to wake them up to be somewhere?

Such cute notes! Sophie is doing the exact same thing!! We found one on Bryce's desk one night (after she'd gotten in trouble for something) that read, "Daddy Im sore." It's so cool to watch them sound out words to both read and write. And if you get the answers to those last 2 questions, please let me know!!! Although, I must admit, that half the time one of our kids falls off their chair during dinner it's b/c they were trying to tickle their sibling, stand and do some ballerina trick all while "sitting", etc. ....maybe the answer to that one isn't so mysterious when our kids are the children in question...

ps - COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS TILL YOU GET HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
