No vacation from motherhood goes unpunished. Last weekend I left behind all responsibility and flew to Idaho to attend my cousin’s wedding. Fall leaves, cool temperatures, crackling fires, family time, and a lovely wedding made for an idyllic first visit to an almost completed Idylwolf. Somehow a quick dash of a trip like that is both rejuvenating and exhausting. I spent a lot of time this week scrambling to pick up where I left off. That should be no reflection on Josh, however! He held things together perfectly at home. The girls were thrilled to have exclusive daddy time. I’ve heard tales of eating at Mooyah, our favorite local hamburger joint, reading Cowboy Sam, playing with neighbors, going to parent teacher conference, making banana bread, and riding the daddy horse. The girls were happy, the house was clean, and the laundry was even done and folded when I arrived home! It was just my routine that was upside down, backward, and behind schedule.

We have been working on memorizing the Articles of Faith as part of our morning scripture study. I decided that living amongst all these Christians we had better know what we believe. We started memorizing back when we first arrived in Texas and this week we finished. Kate, age 5 years and 5 months, has all thirteen Articles of Faith memorized! She amazes me. I can never remember which number is which principle. Josh is still working on number 7. And, Jane repeats number 2 over and over again. Kate is definitely our shining star. ☺
Kate had a big week at school. She went on her first field trip to “Pumpkins on the Prarie.” From what information I can get from her, the highlight was definitely riding the school bus. Jane is green with envy and keeps asking me when she will be able to ride a school bus. Kate also had a “Community Helper” day at school where the children were asked to dress up as a community helper; that’s as close as we get to a Halloween celebration here in Texas. Kate went as a crossing guard. We went to the fabric store and found some great orange material on clearance. We made her a vest, decorated it using duct tape and a sharpie and painted a stop sign. She did a lot of the work herself. It was fun to work on a project with her and see how excited she was when we were done. She was the cutest crossing guard I’ve ever seen.

The game of the week was playing dog. Kate informed me “Until we get a real dog, I’m going to pretend to be a dog.” And, of course, Jane followed suit. Kate put out a food and water dishes on the floor for herself and Jane and they proceeded to have breakfast puppy-style. They went around the house on all fours and respond with barks, yaps, and ruffs whenever I ask them a question. Jane continued the game all morning after we walked Kate to school.

The story of the week happened on Thursday night. Josh was working late. I got the girls in bed, cleaned up, packed lunches, finished all the other evening tasks and then went to bed. I was so tired. At 5:30 a.m. I woke up with a start and realized that Josh still wasn’t home. Late is normal. That late was scary. I sent him a text message to make sure he was okay. The response I received: “I’m doing great and I’m first in line!” I guess he arrived home a little after midnight. I was apparently very deep in sleep. He checked on the girls, changed his clothes, kissed me goodnight, took his sleeping bag and camping mat, drove to the AT&T store and slept outside so he would be in line to pick up the new iPhone the next morning. We haven’t done anything like that since the last Harry Potter book came out. Yes, I’m married to a complete nutter but he did it for me! My phone has been dying a slow and painful death, but at Josh’s bidding I have been holding out for the new version of the iPhone to come out. Friday was the day! I figured we would order one, but Josh had a better plan. He camped out all night in front of the store! I dropped Kate off at school the next morning and then Jane and I ran down to the store. Josh was inside by then and the line was extending down the sidewalk. Thanks to my sweet husband, I now own a phone that rings when people call and has a screen that works. Oh, happy day!
