Boo!

Fast Sunday right after Halloween should not be allowed--all those miniature candy bars just staring you down!

We had a fun Halloween. We carved our pumpkin Sunday night. Josh cleaned it out. The girls designed it. And I carved it per my very specific instructions, even the round nose. We roasted pumpkin seeds and made pumpkin cookies. Our neighbors hosted a small get together on Halloween, so we had a healthy meal of hotdogs before we filled up with candy. I took my two little Indians out trick-or-treating. I taught them the basics of the art as mastered over the years by the Staker and Hale “Little Kids.” My girls may only be 3 and 5, but they know that you RUN from house to house. Josh was able to join us a little later on in the evening. We all finished up the trick-or-treating rounds together. Since family time is at a premium, we decided to leave our house unattended and take a leap of faith with the sign and candy bowl out front. We’ll never know how that worked out, except that the candy was gone when we returned home.

The rest of our week was spent recovering from Halloween: experimenting with the highs and crashes of a sugar rush and monitoring the effects of sleep deprivation. The treats are for the kids. The tricks are for the parents.

Yesterday just as we were preparing to head out for our Saturday family run, Jane melted down. She was “NOT TIRED!!!” and “WANTED TO GO FOR A RUN!!!” But, I put her down for a rest and sent Josh out for a solo run. When he got back, Kate and I went out for a bike ride. Kate rode 5 miles! We had such a fun time out for a ride together in the beautiful cool weather. In some ways it’s fun to have your kiddos grow up a little. When we got home, Jane was still sleeping. We were all grateful for slower paced weekend.

We are counting down the hours and minutes until Grandpa Larry and Grandma Shelly come to visit this week. In Philadelphia I ran our guests into the ground trying to make sure they didn’t miss out on seeing anything. In Frisco I think we will be at the other extreme. Fortunately, grandparents enjoy things like having lunch at elementary schools, watching gymnastics lessons, and going for walks. I will find fun things to do around here, but up until now my time and energy has been focused around home.

We are happy to be into November, the best month of the year!

A most excellent pumpkin, I have to say! Glad to hear you had such a fun holiday. We did the same thing with all of us going out for family time and it worked out quite well. Love, love, love your craft table and am now in the process of talking Aaron into the idea. :)
