Kate's Language

Kate loves to talk.  It is so fun to hear her express herself.  She has inherited the family trait of making up words.  Remember binik, creachy, and groder?  Here are some of her unique words and a few of her favorite code phrases as well:

"beautiful flies" = butterflies
"sloppies" = flip-flops
"benture" = adventure
"drawings" = crayons
"I need a nose wipe." = Someone hurt my feelings.
"I need to take a little rest." = I did something naughty and I know it.
"I want to hold you." = I want to cuddle for a minute, but only a minute.
"Can I hold your finger?" = I'm a little bit scared.
"I need a band-aid." = Taking after her mother, she thinks band-aids solve everything from hurt feelings to major abrasions.

Almost everyday I am amazed by something Kate says.  She has a new way of describing our family: "Trouble Dad.  Beautiful Mom.  Happy Kate.  And, Little Jane.  That's our family."  She certainly hit the beautiful mom part right on the head.

The other day as we were sitting down to dinner, Kate saw something she thought was carrots and asked for some.  I dished a few onto her plate, cut them up into a manageable size and, handing her the plate, said, "Here are your carrots."  She poked one with her fork, looked at it for a second, and replied, "No, this is something else."  All I could do was laugh.  She was right.   They were sweet potatoes.

Language is such an amazing and baffling thing.  It is so much fun to see a little one working it out.
