The End of Summer

Our summer fun is coming to a close. Joshua and I are headed back to Philadelphia this week. We will make the long (and fun--Josh assures me) drive. The girls will fly out with Grandma Shelly and Grandpa Larry to meet us a week later. The distance of the drive, the amount of stuff we have to cram in our car, and the car sick tendencies of our girls all led us to accept the gracious offer of my parents to help us out yet again. The next time I write we will be back in Philadelphia and I will again be begging you to come visit us. Now taking reservations...

To welcome Joshua home from Texas in triumph, we had a celebratory feast in his honor last Sunday. I know I ate more than was good for me and, since there were no leftovers, I also know that everyone else at the table did the same. Alan made cheese soufflé, steak frit, and a molten chocolate cake. It is nice to have a reason to celebrate and a brother who likes to celebrate by feasting. Thank you, Joshua, for giving us the reason and thank you, Alan, for giving us a feast.

We did our best to pack in as much fun as possible during this week of being together without any obligations. We went fishing, hiking, shopping, and picnicking. Josh got up with the girls in the mornings and let me sleep past 7, which was especially nice because I know he is just as sleep deprived as I am. We played at the playground and ran through the sprinklers. We had fun family dinners and movie parties. And then, to wrap up the summer in style, we made another quick dash out to Roosevelt so Kate and Jane could see their cousins and we could ride our bikes. The girls were in bliss. Josh and I were in that half misery half bliss where you think you are going to die and then talk about how great it was as soon as your heart rate has recovered. Today we are all exhausted.

Thank you to everyone who has made our summer so fun. We definitely received more than we gave this summer. Thank you to all of you friends and family for including us in your adventures, welcoming us into your homes, surrounding us with love, and strengthening us for the year ahead. We love you!

It is hard to say goodbye to summer! I have seen some leaves changing already, getting ready for that beautiful, brief Indian summer. It's almost time to break out those cinnamon apple candles and get ready for a cozy fall.

You have such a beautiful family, Sunny! What lucky girls to have such a fun mom!
