Spring Break - Part 2

Spring Break continues. All can say is, I could get used to this! I could get used to having a husband around. I could get used to skipping my cleaning day. I could get used to having time to read and exercise. I could get used to eating brownies and ice cream every night. I could get used to determining my schedule for the day by what I feel like doing when I wake up. I could get used to having someone around to help me park and shuttle the girls inside. I could get used to taking an occasional nap. In short, I guess I could get used to being lazy. A little voice inside me says I wouldn’t like it forever. A bigger voice inside me says it isn’t opposed to experimenting for a few months to find out. ☺

Our objective this week was to show Josh around Philly. My suspicion that the girls and I live in Philadelphia while Joshua lives at Wharton has certainly been confirmed. We took him for the FIRST time to places we have been over and over and over again like the Constitution Center, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Elfreth’s Alley, Reading Terminal Market, and the Franklin Fountain (an old fashioned ice cream parlor). He responded with comments like “Wow, it’s fun being here in Philadelphia,” “This is the kind of place that makes Philadelphia cool,” “I could come here every day,” “That was a really neat place,” “You really know where you are going.” etc.

We have also done some fun family activities like going to the zoo, running along the Schuylkill River, and going ice skating. We hit the zoo on the most beautiful day. The sun was shining and we were loving it almost as much as the animals. We relished the first signs of Spring during our family runs as well. I am trying to learn to like running. I like that Josh talks to me while we run. I like to be out in the sunshine. I like the feeling of having exercised. I’m still trying to keep an open mind about the actual running part. Let’s just say that when I brought my bike up out of the basement to get it serviced, just the sight of the bright green frame got me really excited. My running shoes don’t make me feel the same way just yet. Our ice skating adventure was also really fun. Jane’s skates where one of the cutest things I have ever seen. Once we persuaded her to put them on her feet, which was not an easy task, she didn’t want to leave the ice. Josh would lean over and hold her around the thighs. She would lean back on his arms like he was a recliner and let her feet glide along as he skated. If he ever tried to leave the ice to let his back have a rest she would vehemently protest. Kate went from slipping all over in all directions to holding herself upright and steady and enjoying a little speed. We had one head bonk crisis but in general a good time was had by all.

The splurge of the week was an outing to the Adventure Aquarium just across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Jersey side of the Delaware River. We had to talk ourselves into going because it is a little pricey, but it was spectacular! Ever since we went to the aquarium in Boston Kate has been saying that sharks are her favorite animal. At this aquarium you can pet sharks, you can see all different kinds of sharks, and there is a tunnel you can walk through where the sharks are swimming all around you. The girls were literally squealing with delight as the big sharks would come swimming toward them and then pass right over their heads. We had a wonderful day there and are now the proud owners of an annual pass, like all things Philly the admission fee is high and the price of a yearly pass in only a little higher. Two trips and we will have made up the difference. Any more and it gets cheaper all the time. Woodford Economics again becomes a nice tool for justification. I have a feeling the Aquarium will quickly be right up there with the Please Touch Museum for favorite outing destinations.

The rest of our time this week has been spent reading, cooking, playing at parks, cleaning up after Tropical Storm Woodford (which frequents our little row home), getting together with friends, and whittling away at our household to do list. I am still trying to persuade Josh to help me hang some pictures, but he is quite convinced that will ruin any fun we have had or may have during Spring Break. I don’t think my chances are great.

If there is one thing that makes higher education worth the cost, it is a two week Spring Break! We are headed to New York City tomorrow for our final adventure. Then on Wednesday it is back to reality.
