Our first day in Mexico we went out to get some lunch. We sat down at a cafe and began drinking the most heavenly pina coladas you can imagine and then looked over to see dolphins swimming about 15 feet away from where we were sitting. It was one of those, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!" kind of experiences and just the beginning of the memorable moments of the trip.
The Mayan ruins we visited were amazing--almost unbelievable. This picture is from Coba. We were able to climb to the top of this pyramid and overlook the canopy of the jungle. It was beautiful and a neat way to connect to the past.
Pyramid at Coba
We rented bikes and rode through the jungle around the site at Coba. You would be riding along enjoying the natural air conditioning and then see some ruins off to the side of the path. You'd pull over and explore the site for a few minutes and then continue on. Honestly, it was almost surreal to see the evidence of that great civilization, I imagine made more so by our familiarity with and love for the Book of Mormon. These weren't the actual "Book of Mormon" sites, but it was similar enough to make you think.
We found an authentic taco stand that was amazing. Once a few brave souls tried the food and didn't get sick we kept going back. This was the REAL Mexican food and it was tasty. I think Joshua would have eaten there every meal of every day!
We went to church on Sunday at a branch in Playa del Carmen. I love going to church in different countries. It is so different and yet so much the same. I always come away feeling a love for and a bond with the people that you don't get any other way.
Another of our favorite activities was snorkeling. We explored the Grand Cenote, which is an underground fresh water river that has collapsed. It looks like a nice little pond from the top, but when you look under the water you see vast caverns and stalactites and all sorts of things to explore. We also saw some fun fish off the beaches. My favorite was a black fish with bright blue spots that almost glowed. And, perhaps the coolest snorkeling experience, we got to swim with sea turtles. They were eating the grass along the bottom of the ocean floor and then they would swim up to the surface for air. It was so fun to follow along right behind them and then pop your head out of the water as they did and see them take a breath.
All in all, it was an amazing trip and a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary. Thank you to everyone who made it possible!

That sounds so fun! Happy anniversary you two!!!
Looks like such a fun trip. We have been to Yucatan and also to Coba a few times in October. It is so wonderful (as long as there isn't a hurricane on the horizon). This is definitely one of our favorite destinations. I loved your pictures.
